Why seven or eight years

The Ethiopian calendar begins its year on a different day from the Gregorian one and counts from a different number. Above is what today is in both.

The two calendars differ because they count the year of the Annunciation by different reckonings. The gap is not one number: it is 7 years from the Ethiopian new year to 31 December, and 8 for the rest of the Gregorian year. It moves because the year turns on a different day. The converter handles any date, not just this one.
